Week Three: Cesar Chavez, "The Organizer's Tale"

Chavez gives an account of both group and personal struggle in his effort to unite farm workers in California. Today, United Farm Workers has expanded its efforts to gain basic rights for laborers beyond farm fields as well. In the picture, a team of Hispanic workers sorts garlic at a processing plant in Gilroy, CA. Visit the UFW's website here.

  1. "...you do it because you want to see it done, or maybe because you want power." The bottom line for Cesar Chavez is to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. I think that communiy organization efforts like these are important for the health of this country and the agriculture industry across the board. What kind of nation would this be if everyone looked the other way when presented with labor abuses.

  2. "If people give you their food they'll give you their hearts." Chavez found that an incredibly strong bond is formed with people through their food. This is a powerful quote and an important idea expressed in the writing. Farm workers are an essential part of our food system, but in a ssytem that is so deeply flawed these people who we rely on so much often struggle even to feed themselves. Chavez's story is as inspirational as it is socially important. He made great advances for the rights of farm workers, but there is still a long way to go.
